You play as Ezra Macaroni Rollercoaster. Ezra talks to his friend Professor Linguine who has created a device called The Returner that can bring spirits (known as 'sprites') back to the physical realm in order for people to say goodbye to those who left this Earth too quickly. Problem child of the town Vilian Buckles steals the invention and runs away towards the desert, where a special mineral, Mish, can be found which powers The Returner. Ezra assembles a party and heads out to find Vilian and retrieve the invention.

Ezra and his team reach the desert and enter the dungeon where they’re sure Vilian is. They notice the walls have been scavenged and there is hardly any Mish left. They realize Vilian is no longer in the dungeon, but has left a beast, Calvinius the Treacherous, to slow down Ezra’s party.

After defeating Calvinius, the team returns to Chowderville to report back to Professor Linguine about what they found. By the time they get back, the town has been pillaged and they find the Professor being held captive by Vilian in the laboratory. Vilian has started to use the invention with an excessive amount of Mish. Because of this, the sprites that return to Earth are more aggressive and dangerous than they should be. Vilian Buckles kills Professor Linguine and sabotages the laboratory, fleeing in the process. Ezra and his party must escape the building before it collapses.

The team is able to make it out alive except for Ezra who is caught in the building’s avalanche. He crosses over to the ‘other side’ (Ghostland) where he meets Marty, gatekeeper of Ghostland. Ezra explains his story and Marty becomes fearful of what might happen if Vilian goes too far. Unable to do anything himself, Marty speaks with the Aged Ones, who agree to Ezra return to Earth, but only after completing their challenge to prove he means well.

Ezra goes forth with the Aged Ones’ challenge of entering the Forbidden Forest and solving its many puzzles, as well as defeating the beast inside, Tyramine. When he does, the Aged Ones show Ezra the correct way back to Earth.

When Ezra reaches Earth, he finds it’s been overrun by sprites forcefully kidnapped from Ghostland and brought here where they angrily haunt & terrorize its citizens. Ezra regroups with his party and they make their way once again towards the (now haunted) dungeon in the desert where Vilian awaits. The team enter battle with Vilian Buckles for one final showdown. After they defeat Vilian, she explains that she just wanted to seek revenge for her mother being taken away from her as a child, and maybe see her again in the process.

The sprites are brought peace and return to Ghostland, along with Ezra, in solitude.
